How Much Should You Be Spending on is c++ case sensitive?

I don’t know if c++, as a programming language, is case sensitive or not. I did a quick search and it seems it is not, so I can’t say definitively.

I have a small test project, but it is very difficult to use it. There are also multiple threads I can’t access in c++. I am curious how many threads I can access.

It depends on your development environment. In Ubuntu, C++ has very different case insensitivity and it’s not really a problem unless you are using a compiler version prior to 4.0.0.0. If you’re using a compiler before then, you’ll have to handle the case yourself, and you’d want to look at the case-insensitive flag in your compiler to do that.

As the title implies, if you’re not using a compiler before, then you will always have to type the -c compiler-specific flag in your own compiler, or you will get an error from the compiler that says “invalid compiler version”. For example, if you are using 3.1.0 or earlier (3.1.10), it will throw an error: “C++ 7.0+ compiler has an incomplete file name”.

This problem with case sensitivity can be solved quite easily in Linux (since its case sensitive by default). As a good developer friend of mine put it, if you can do it in Linux, you should be able to do it in Windows as well.

The thing is, you can get c++ case sensitive, but you can’t get gcc case sensitive. So how can you tell? Well, if you are using gcc, you can tell by looking at the output of the command gcc –version. If using gcc, you can ask c++ compilers to check their case sensitivity.

That is, in order to get gcc case sensitive, you need to compile gcc with -fcase-sensitive-strings option. Of course, you can also use it on the command line, but I prefer to have an automated way to do it.
